Since the early 1960's Richard has worked in professional theatre and television production designing props & sets, scenery and costumes for children's shows, staged opera's, ballets, touring Broadway shows, orchestra's and hundreds of live concerts and specials. In 1963 Owen was splitting his time between opera's like "Madam Butterfly" and kids television shows. While sewing costumes and designing puppets, Owen had his first involvement with wire sculpture. Later in 1965 he was dramatically influenced by Alexander Calder and Constantin Brancusi and began an adventure in sculpture.
By the time the 1967 Expo hit Montreal, Owen became very much involved with live performances, especially symphony orchestras and ballet company's as scenery carpenter, set designer and stage manager. Keeping his hands in television production, Owen was also busy working on such shows as "Party Game", "Don Messer's Jubilee", "The Palace" TV Variety Shows, and "Tiny Talent Time" among others. Since 1972 until today Owen maintains a busy schedule as Stage Manager and Props Manager for major programming at Hamilton Place Theatre.
Through all that busy history working professionally in live theatre and television production, Richard Owen has managed to travel the world studying his artistic craft, showcasing his work, executing monumental art installations for private and corporate commissions, all while continuing to create an impressive collection of award winning art.
Beginning in the mid-80's Owen started showing his art in gallery's regionally and nationally. In 1995, Hamilton Place Theatre along with the Hamilton Entertainment
and Convention Facilities
(HECFI), began hosting
continuous rotating
exhibitions of Owen's
paintings and drawings.
Now we finally get to see
much of this collective
work in progress all
housed and displayed
in one intimate space!
